The forests of the Waitākere Ranges are almost like a jungle.

The sand is black due to a high iron content due to the eroded ancient volcanoes in the area.
The Tasman Sea
Part of the Gannet colony.
The walkway gets you so close to the bird's nests.

We saw plenty of Gannets during our time in New Zealand. At one point when we were swimming in the sea they were diving for fish all around us.
The wild West Coast
The West Coast of Auckland feels a bit remote and wild. We did several hikes through the forests of the Waitākere Ranges. These photos are from a visit to Muriwai to see the famous Gannet colony.
